Katherine’s CENIT experience
Katherine Lawrey
CENIT volunteer
January 2003-July 2003
The six months I volunteered at CENIT were fantastic. I spent time at all the street outreach sectors that were open at that time - Registro Civil, Mayorista, Trole - but was mainly based at the Camal market.
Our morning sessions were not as well organised as they seem to be now, but the mayhem was fun.
I’d leave every session, dusty from sitting on the ground and covered in glue, but always with a warm fuzzy feeling as I remembered something funny one of the kids had done that day.
It was great to pull together with motivated young people from around the world to help a beautiful bunch of kids and their families.

I also tried fundraising for CENIT while Iwas out there. This was dispiriting, as it was very hard to make sense of CENIT’s finances in order to apply for specific grants.
Again, that is something I am happy to see improving. I’m so pleased three years on to be still be involved with helping CENIT and I cannot wait to get back there one day to revisit old friends and see the progress that has been made.
